Senator Ahmad Sani Stores Appointed Pro-Chancellor, New Officers Named at Alvan Ikoku Federal University
In a significant development for Nigeria’s educational landscape, Senator Ahmad Sani Stores has been appointed as the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education (AIFUE), Owerri. This appointment marks a pivotal point in the transition of the institution from a College of Education to a University as Senator Stores steps into the role previously held by Senator (Dr.) Joy Emodi, CON who has now taken up a new position as Pro-Chancellor of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM).
Senator Ahmad Sani Stores brings a wealth of leadership expertise, especially legislative and financial experience to AIFUE at a transformative moment in its history. The institution, recently upgraded from a Federal College of Education to a University of Education under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, is still navigating the transition process.
A statement from the Federal Government on 6 February, 2025 signed by Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, announced the appointment, highlighting the changes as a means of strengthening the tertiary education system. Mr. Onanuga said, “The restructuring aims to strengthen governance and academic excellence within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.”
Until his appointment, Senator Ahmad Sani Stores was a member of the Governing Council of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. In 2011, he was elected as Senator representing Katsina Central Senatorial District in his home state. He was educated in the United Kingdom and is a financial and export consultant. Senator Ahmad Sani Stores is one of the founding fathers of the Foundation for Good Governance and Development in Nigeria.
In a similar development, Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri has appointed new Principal Officers following the expiration of the former officers’ tenures. Mrs. Ngozi Ethel Megwa, Mr. Udodiri Nwaohiri and Dr. Magnus Unegbu were appointed Acting Registrar, Acting Bursar and Acting University Librarian respectively. The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius Onyeka, working on the directive of the Federal Ministry of Education that Principal Officers in the upgraded Colleges whose tenures had expired should hand over to the most senior officers, appointed Mrs. Megwa, Mr. Nwaohiri and Dr. Unegbu in acting capacity from 24 February, 2025. Their appointments have been ratified by the Governing Council.
