Professor Aloysius Onyeka appointed new Acting Vice-Chancellor of AIFUE

Professor Aloysius Chijioke Onyeka has been appointed as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri. The appointment took effect from February 10, 2025 and is for a period of six months. Professor Onyeka’s core mandate is to facilitate the emergence of a new substantive Vice-Chancellor for the university.

Professor Onyeka, a renowned statistician and academic administrator, hails from Okporo in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. He obtained his first degree in Statistics from Imo State University, Etiti and later earned his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Statistics from the University of Ibadan. He was the best graduating M.Sc. student, Department of Statistics, University of Ibadan in 1988 and the Pioneer Best Graduating B.Sc. student, Faculty of Science, Imo State University, Etiti in 1985.

Prior to his appointment, Professor Onyeka served as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of K. O. Mbadiwe University, Ideato, Imo State. He has also held various positions, at the Federal University of Technology Owerri, including Head of the Department of Statistics, Head of Computer Science Department and Director of the ICT Centre.

A prolific researcher, Professor Onyeka has published numerous articles in reputable local and international journals. His research interests include statistical computing, sampling theory, and survey methodology. He is a member of several professional bodies, including the International Statistical Institute (ISI), International Association of Survey Statisticians (IASS), and Nigerian Statistical Association (NSA). Professor Onyeka has run statistical analysis for over 80 Ph.D. Theses, spanning areas like the Sciences, Engineering, Agriculture, Social Sciences, Environmental Studies, Medical Sciences and Education.

Professor Aloysius Onyeka has made remarkable contributions and innovation in University administration. He developed a user-friendly software, the “Academic Transcript Software (ATS)” and the Results Spreadsheet Software (RSS) for seamless digital preparation and preservation of academic transcripts and students results.

As the Director of ICT at FUTO, Professor Onyeka pioneered the use of Computer-based testing (CBT) in writing JAMB examinations in 2015 and in conducting Post-UTME screening exercise.

Professor Onyeka has worked with the Imo State Government as a resource person in various training programme.

He is married to Professor Uloma Onyeka, a FUTO Professor of Food Chemistry and Nutrition, and they have children.
