The International Center for English Studies

Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, P.M.B. 1033, Owerri,

Imo State, Nigeria, introduces you to The International Center for English Studies:

In line with UNESCO’s (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) philosophy of having educational institutions conform to new educational theories and practice, and with the body having specifically recommended AIFCE for receptivity and capacity to generate, undertake and realize sound educational ideas and goals, the International Centre for English Studies was founded. The Centre was duly accredited, and commissioned by Prof. A.B Fafunwa, a former Minister of Education on August 10, 1992.

Since then, the Centre has been running short-term certificate programmes for foreign students from non-English speaking African countries: Franco-phone, Spanish and Portuguese.

Right now, what we offer in conformity with UNESCO’s educational ideals and realizable goals is expanding to accommodate the current Nigerian educational need to inculcate in the student entrepreneurial skills for self-sufficiency. The Centre is expanding to offer executive and Certificate programmes leading to the award of Diploma in English language, and Acting. The programmes are designed for professionals, politicians, business men and women, military and paramilitary organizations, writers, actors, comedians, tourists, lecturers, embassy staff and other categories of people. The Centre also prepares students for the Joint Matriculation Examination (JME/JAMB) for admission into Nigerian Universities and Colleges of Education and Polytechnics.

The Centre stresses the optimum conception and realization of language courses, a friendly class atmosphere and one-to-one guidance with all courses having thorough-bred, qualified,  highly experienced teachers and instructors that deploy modern instructional media.

Besides other modern classroom teaching and learning Aids, the Centre avails its students with well-equipped library and laboratory for language teaching, and film projectors and other overhead transparencies mounted for convenience of teaching and learning in a conducive atmosphere. The Centre has up-to-date medical and sports facilities. There is also secure accommodation within the College premises for those who wish to live in the college.

 Extracurricular

Field Trips and Excursions to places of interest are periodically arranged for students consistent with the Centre’s belief in acculturation as a means of achieving the central goal of second language learning.

Admission

Admission is open all year round and Forms are obtained on line or at ALVANA Microfinance Bank located within the College premises on the payment of #5,000.00 non-refundable fees.

DURATION

The programme lasts for one year for Certificate on English language proficiency and two years for Diploma Certificate in English, or acting.

Conclusion

Since its inception, the International Centre for English Studies has lived up to its expectations in its drive not only to equip the Nigerian second language learner with the prerequisite basic skills to achieve proficiency in English language, but has effectively imparted the right attitude and confidence needed to achieve optimum success in ones area of profession. The Center bridges the gap that categorizes English language learning for higher education and limiting it and excluded very many others professionals that never studied English language as majors.

Thanks for your cooperation.
