BRIEF PROFILE OF THE DIRECTORATE

The lnternational Centre for English Studies was commissioned by prof. A. B. Fafunwa on August 10, 1992 and was established in Alvan under the provost ship of Prof. Ernest Emenyonu, with an initial intake of seventy-three students drawn from various Non English speaking African countries to undertake intensive English Language”drilling and teaching for one year. The Centre has all these years spread its tentacles to admitting students from these Non- English speaking African countries. lt was founded by the federal ministry of education and domiciled in Alvan. The aim is to foster unity amongst the non English speaking countries through exchange programme and otherwise. Over the years, the centre has flourished in leaps and bounds achieving its set goals and beyond by training students from countries who hitherto could not understand, speak or write a word in English Language to become proficient in English language. lt is worthy of note that the graduafes of the centre have grown to become critical workforce and important members of their various nations’workforce, important personalities and well sought after in different strata of life in their countries. Others have gone on to study degree and post graduate programmes here in Nigeria and Abroad.

VISION
The vision of the centre is to enable students acquire great competence and performance in the use of English in various aspects of life like world of work, academics and entrepreneurship.

MISSION
To offer an environment for non English speaking West African countries the opportunity to learn English through exchange programs. To enable students acquire English for diverse purposes.
